Itchy Scalp

Is itchy scalp an indication of hair loss? It can be. There are various factors for itchy scalp which we need to identify before determining if hair loss will be the result.

One of the most common causes of itchy scalp is using hair care products with harsh ingredients in them. Ingredients which can impair the hair follicles and consequently cause infections such as folliculitis. This infection needs to be treated timely as it can actually lead to permanent hair loss. One way to detect folliculitis is the presence of tiny white pimples on the hair follicles. If this infection is neglected in it’s initial stages, it can lead to red boils on the head which can mean a very painful experience. Some of the ways used to treat this infection include antibiotics and the use of essential oils such as lavender or tea tree.

scalp-ringworm.jpgAnother major reason for itchy scalp is a fungal infection called ringworm. The indications of this infection are some red areas on the scalp. If care is not given to this infection the result can be peeling of the skin in some areas of the scalp or result in swollen wounds, rashes or black dots. Sometimes natural products or over the counter medications are used for ringworm but proper treatment by a doctor is recommended.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction which can cause irritation to the skin. It can be caused by the growth of yeast and can produce some toxic substances. Dry scalp hair loss and flaking scalp can result with this condition. Natural hair products and oilsseb-derm.jpg extracted from rosemary, tea tree and lavender can be beneficial in treating seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Scalp psoriasis is one of the conditions that has caused hair loss problems among approximately eight million people in the US. This causes white color patches, itching and red skin. Toxins in hair products as well as pollution can strip the natural oils from the scalp which results in dry scalp hair loss and itchy scalp. Use of herbal hair moisturizers and shampoos can assist in solving this problem. Pureology by Redken, which is sold at Fantasia, would be an excellent choice.pureology1.jpg

The bottom line is that you should find out the reason for the itchy scalp then take appropriate steps to solve the problem so that you don’t experience hair loss.

Amy’s Presence by Amy Gibson

I’ve written about Amy Gibson before but since Fantasia carries Cyberhair and Amy’s Presence Wigs, and since Amy’s been in the news again, I thought it might be fun to talk about her again. As you may or may not know, Amy lost her hair at 14 which is what motivated her to design a line of wigs for women.amy-gibson.jpg

When Amy lost her hair at 14 she blamed God. She had no other explanation for why her hair fell out in clumps with every brushing. Within one year she was bald.

At this time Amy was already an actress on General Hospital and she kept her hair loss a secret from most of her colleagues on the daytime soap opera.

In Amy’s words “I thought I had leprosy at first, at the time, no one knew about baldness in women and I didn’t want to be that bald freak”. Amy was diagnosed with alopecia. Over the next 17 years, she received monthly cortisone shots to stimulate her hair growth. But the shots did little to spur permanent growth and wigs became a mode of survival.

Amy mastered the art of walking in the wind with her forehead slightly angled so her wig would not blow off. She concealed it from boyfriends fearing they wouldn’t find her attractive. Says Amy, “hair loss is such a sensitive issue for women. It affects your self-esteem in ways no one can really describe. You begin to feel that you are less than a woman.”

Eventually, Amy started making hairpieces for women. She launched a line, the Color Beautiful Collection in 2006.

Amy, who is now 48, is promoting her wigs, which are made with a high-quality synthetic fiber called Cyberhair. They look and feel like the real thing. While they can be removed for washing and styling, they are secured with a strong adhesive that allows the wearers to swim, sky-dive, water-ski and walk in strong winds or other extreme conditions with fear of losing them. Amy’s wigs cost anywhere from $1500-2500 and can be worn for up to a year.amys-presence.jpg

According to the National Hairloss Association, 40 percent of hair-loss sufferers in the US are women. The causes are varied and can be genetic, related to stress, pregnancy and certain medications including oral contraceptives.

Amy says half of her clients have alopecia and others have undergone chemotherapy. Her goal is to provide them with stylish options. According to Amy, many women who wear wigs pick the wrong color, length and style for their face and lifestyle. “I was a mess for years. I never realized losing my hair was the biggest gift. We can’t undo what has happened to us but I have a solution. You are not alone”.

If you would like information regarding Amy’s Presence Wigs, you can go to Amy’s website: www.amyspresence.com or you can contact Fantasia and speak with one of our Hair Replacement Specialists who would be happy to help you.

Essential Vitamins for the Hair

Our body needs a healthy balance of all nutrients in the diet in order to maintain a healthy life. This article focuses on various types of vitamins which contribute to hair loss problems.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, also known as PABA, is one of the essential vitamins for hair loss problems. It is part of the B complex family and a deficiency in PABA may lead to grey hair.

In combination with folic acid, PABA is found to be effective in restoring healthy hair. A diet rich in vitamin B can restore hair color. It also aids in improving excellence and potency of hair growth. You can get PABA from whole grain and yeast.

Inositol, also belonging to the B complex family and is typically found in brain cells, muscles, liver, kidneys and the eyes. Men loose their hair twice as fast as women, so perhaps it is that men are lacking in inositol and that is why they have the hair loss problems.

Inositol aids in hair loss problems and offers beneficial effects in different types of skin problems.

Biotin, also known as vitamin H and again, belongs to the B complex group. It is essential for hair health. Biotin functions in fat metabolism. Fat is essential for body growthgood-foods.jpg including hair growth. It also helps in prevention of gray hair. Egg yolks are a great source of biotin. Milk and yeast are good sources as well.

Vitamin E consists of antioxidant properties that offer scalp stimulation by enhancing blood circulation. You can get vitamin E from cold-processed vegetable oils, raw seeds and leafy green vegetables.

If you are suffering from high blood pressure or taking anti-coagulant medications, you should not take vitamin E supplements without consulting your doctor.

Vitamin C is also an antioxidant. It is one of the essential vitamins for hair loss issues. It helps maintain healthy skin and hair. There are plenty of natural foods available that-are rich in vitamin C. Citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, pineapples, tomatoes, green pepper, red pepper and many others are a great source of vitamin C.

Vitamin B complex which includes niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), vitamin B6 and vitamin B12; all contribute significantly with various health conditions. B3 helps promote good scalp circulation and is abundant in wheat germ, chicken, fish, turkey and meat. Large intake can cause what is referred to as a niacin flush. Vitamin B5 helps prevent premature graying and hair loss. You will find B5 in egg yolks, whole grain cereals fruits-and-vegies.jpgand organ meats.

When it comes to hair, you definitely are what you eat! And, supplementing your diet makes a whole lot of sense!

Proper Care and Feeding of the Hair

On many occasions, I have blogged about proper nutrition and hair care aiding in the prevention of hair loss. Some of this I’ve talked about before but I think it bears repeating. Others is new information that I like to pass along.

Some of what we know about the hair is that it grows in cycles. Some follicles rest while others are shedding and growing. As you age, re-growth eventually becomes so fine that you can’t see it. The unfortunate statistic is that over 25 percent of women over 50 will lose more than half of their hair.female-hair-loss.jpg

Hair loss can be passed down from either parent’s side. In all likely hood, if you father is bald, you could end up with hair loss issues as well. For the female, the thinning usually occurs throughout the crown area.

Pregnancy, illness, divorce or any other major stressors can cause you to shed all of you “resting” hair. Usually this will happen from 2-6 mounts after the event, although, in these situations, the hair loss is usually temporary and will most likely grow back naturally.

Other contributing factors for hair loss which we’ve also discussed, include protein deficiencies caused by extreme dieting which can also make the hair dry and baby-fine, while tight hairstyles such as ponytails, can put so much tension on the hair follicles that they are ripped out. Once gone, there is nothing left to product new hair.

It is important to keep your hair hydrated and to style it gently. Repetitive stress such as brushing and blow drying can cause damage and break the hair. While clean hair is a good thing, too much shampooing can strip it of nutrients needed for healthy growth. Hot air strips the hair strands of moisture so minimize your use of a hair dryer. The chamois towels we sell at Fantasia are fabulous because they pull most of the moisture out of your hair so it requires very little blow drying.

Last, but not least, here are some foods that can help prevent hair loss:

  • Chickpeas have zinc and vitamin B-6 which are needed for healthy hair. Zinc helps build hair protein and works well with vitamin A. A lack of either of these causes dandruff which can contribute to hair loss.
  • Almonds are a great source of protein, iron and vitamin E. They reportedly lower cholesterol which is a good thing because, you don’t want to have to take cholesterol lowering drugs as they may actually cause hair loss.
  • Whole wheat is a good source of sillica and iron. Silica is important as it helps with wheat-and-oats.jpgthe absorption of many other vitamins and minerals.
  • Oats are a great source of easily absorbable iron in addition to potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.
  • Oranges are a good source of vitamin C which, again, helps make iron more absorbable in the human body. Vitamin C plays a big role in the development of collagen, which is necessary hair growth; helps keep your skin tight and is the “glue” that holds things together in the body.

Sometimes the whole diet thing seems so complicated. The things mentioned above are very simple to implement into your diet. And, as I’ve said many times before, supplementing your diet is necessary as most of us are just not getting everything we need on a daily basis. Many of us at Fantasia are on Isagenix products as we feel they are superior to anything else out there! isagenix.jpgCall us if you are interested in joining us!

A Common Occurance, Female Hair Loss

We’ve talked many times about outside factors which might cause hair loss in women such as medications, surgery, trauma, illness, childbirth and various diseases. Exposure to elements and chemicals might contribute to the problem but these are rare cases and are normally easy to diagnose right away.

Obviously, some hair loss is perfectly normal. Hair grows for between two and six years, so, one hair might grow continuously and then fall out. The natural cause of hair loss in women is at the end of this cycle when the strands fall out. Normally, the follicles then grow another strand to continue the cycle. Each strand has a different growth cycle which is why we lose strands of hair every day and never lose a lot of hair in any given day.

There are some women who prefer a particular hairstyle which could be responsible for their hair loss. I personally know of one, who always has her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Wearing your hair in a tight ponytail with a rubber band, can irritate the hair follicles byponytail.jpg continually pulling on the hair. This makes the hair follicle die out and release the hair. Cornrows are another style which can do the same thing. The solution for this type of hair loss is to simply choose a different style and wear the hair loose. If you are presently wearing or considering extensions, make sure they are good ones and are applied by a professional as they too, can damage the hair causing traction alopecia. Sometimes this is reversible, sometimes not.

Childbirth is another natural cause of female hair loss, one I have previously writtenpregnant.jpg about. In many cases, being pregnant releases hormones that can enhance the woman’s skin and hair. after childbirth, the loss of these hormones is the cause of female hair loss. some women may experience losing several strands of hair at a time while, for others, the hair loss is minimal and they may not even notice it.

Nobody gives a second thought to a balding male. But, as rude as it may be, people will stare at females with sparse or patchy hair. The reason is because as prevalent as it is becoming in our society, it is still considered by some to be very unusual. The truth is that more women suffer from female hair loss than you can imagine.

But, that said, there are so many non-surgical solutions today for women suffering with thinning hair or hair loss. It is not as it once was where you were forced to endure it and perhaps change your life because of it. If you’d like more information about this, call Fantasia, we are here to help.

Menopause and Hair Loss

Did you know that women can experience sudden hair loss when approaching menopause? As many as 40% of women will have to deal with this condition. While there are actually many causes for female hair loss, menopause is the time most women are affected.women-meno.jpg

Changes in hormonal levels are the reason for increased hair loss and thinning hair in women during the time of menopause. In fact, hair loss can be one of the first signs that a woman is experiencing menopause. In part, it is caused by a drop in estrogen levels produced by the ovaries, creating an imbalance between androgen (male hormones) and estrogen hormones. For men, testosterone is the hormone commonly associated with causing male pattern hair loss. In women this is produced in much lower quantities but creates a similar hair loss condition. This process started by testosterone combining with an enzyme called Alpha5 reductase to create a substance called DHT. The DHT is responsible for the hair loss. After menopause, the ovaries may continue to produce even more androgens than estrogen and this can result in further hair loss. It doesn’t just affect hair on the scalp but body hair can also become thinner, just the opposite of men who tend to get more body hair as scalp hair thins. Some women experience no menopausal hair loss or excessive thinning, and reasons for this are not fully understood.

Many women are prescribed hormone replacement treatment (HRT) to counter some of the more severe symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, lack of sleep, mood swings and sensitive skin. HRT works by increasing the levels of estrogen to pre-menopausal levels. HRT can also be an effective hair loss treatment but is not without side effects. This is something you should discuss with your doctor.

There are a number of non-drug based alternatives that can be used to slow down menopausal hair loss. Something as simple as gently massaging the scalp when shampooing to increase blood flow to the hair roots. Use quality products containing natural ingredients. And, as we’ve discussed many times, it’s important to eat a well balanced diet as healthy hair requires the minimum daily intake of the right minerals and vitamins. Try to eat plenty of fish, liver, dairy products, eggs, poultry, balanced-diet.jpgmeat, etc, for vitamin A, vitamin B6, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Be sure to eat leafy vegetables, orange juice and avocados. Broccoli and beets are a good source of folic acid which is important for hair health.

If you find you are loosing hair as you go through menopause, you may want to keep your hair short to help prevent any breakage. Ask your stylist to layer it to give you the appearance of more volume. Try to avoid damaging your hair with hot dryers and heated hair straighteners. And, avoid bleaching if possible.

If you need help with your thinning hair call for a consultation with one of the Hair Replacement Specialists at Fantasia, they would love to work with you.

Great Trauma for a Woman

By now, you know that hair loss affects millions of men, women and children. This is something which can destroy the self-esteem, confidence and dignity of a person- any person. But, if it is a woman, if can be even more traumatic. We think of most women as beautiful but excessive hair loss tarnished tarnished a woman’s beauty.bald-woman.jpg Hair loss in women shatters the personality and can cause a great deal of humiliation at the same time.

If you feel you are losing excessive hair, you should be concerned and see a professional. Pattern hair loss in women is different from the type of hair loss a man will experience. For men, hair loss is often localized at the top of the head. For women it can be the top of the head as well as the sides of the head.

Women have a tendency to resort to inappropriate treatments such as coloring, perming and pull the hair back which can cause even more hair loss in some instances. Furthermore, women are more susceptible to hormonal imbalance which can make them more prone to hair loss. Post pregnancy or prolonged illness or surgery all can contribute to female hair loss. The use of antidepressant medications and birth control pills which contain anticoagulant can also lead to hair loss in women. Thyroid, whether over-active or under-active, can lead to hair loss in women.

While there are some home hair loss remedies that are actually good for the scalp, a better plan would be to use something specifically formulated for hair loss such as Hair Support System. You can call Fantasia for more information on this product.hair-support-system.jpg

Other things you can do naturally would include consumption of protein rich foods as your hair is comprised of a protein called keratin. And, drink lots of water to stay well hydrated as dehydration can also cause hair loss.

If hair loss continues and you know you are not dealing with any serious health issues, there are many solutions available for you to chose from today. While it is still a traumatic experience for any woman to have to deal with, you can continue living your life to the fullest despite the hair loss issues.

Vanity, Vanity, Thy Name is Babyboomer…

Have you ever thought that perhaps we are obsessed with this whole hair loss thing? That the baby boomers are a self conscious, self absorbed group who absolutely do not want to age and are fighting it kicking and screaming? What a selfish culture we have become.

julius-cesar.jpgWell guess what? The desire to avoid hair loss is not a baby-boomer thing and is not confined to our time in history. In ancient Egypt, men used to rub fat from crocodiles, snakes, lions and other animals on their head in hopes of preventing or treating hair loss. Julius Caesar and Napoleon also experienced hair loss and tried to conceal it by growing their hair long in the back and combing it forward over their heads. Actually, I’m still seeing this one occasionally today-the ultimate comb over! It’s really fun to watch if there’s a strong wind.

There are many causes of thinning hair or baldness. Genetics plays a role in this condition, the male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness may be due to genetic make-up; it is referred to as androgenetic alopeica. Hair loss may be experienced 3-4 months after an illness or surgery and this type of loss is usually temporary. Overactive or underactive thyroid, androgen or estrogen imbalance can all cause hair loss.

Poor nutrition and crash dieting are huge when it comes to hair loss, I’ve written quite a bit about this. When the protein, vitamins and minerals are inadequate in the diet, the hair is not going to be healthy and growing as it should.

Improper hair care and styling such as wearing your hair in pigtails, cornrows or tight rollers and bad hair extensions can all cause traction alopecia which can eventually lead to scarring and later to permanent hair loss.

There are several treatments for hair loss most of which are drugs with side effects. Once you stop taking these medications, hair loss resumes. Surgeries and transplants are expensive options and not affordable for the average person.

hair-support-system.jpgThere is an effective natural hair loss solution without harmful side effects which we use at Fantasia called Hair Support System. Hair Support System begins with an analysis of the scalp and in-depth salon treatment followed by home treatments. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, call to schedule a consultation with one of our hair support specialist.

Women and Stress

Girsl learn from their older siblings or their mom just how they are supposed to look and to behave. When a girl sees older girls or mom fussing over her hair and spending an inordinate amount of time on her appearance, she will grow up to believe this is the correct way for a woman to behave.
