An integration hair system combines natural hair and new hair. The key function for any hair integration is the ability to pull your existing, growing hair directly through the unit. It is a small system combined with your own natural growing hair to fill in the areas where you are lacking hair. Integrations are designed to work in conjunction with, and enhance and complement your own natural hair. Your own hair is combined with the hair on the integration piece to create the look of a full, complete, beautiful head of hair. Another hair replacement option is a vacuum-pressure attachment which is made of a hard, soft, or semi-soft polyurethane or silicone. Prices will vary due to materials but the range for vacuum wigs is from $3000-5000.

In order to be a candidate for this hair replacment system, you would have to have no hair at all. The lining is strecthed over the head and the prosthetic (wig) is fastened to the scalp with suction. There are pluses and minuses to using this type of replacement.

• There is less breathability which could initially causes rashes, however your body will adjust to this.
• If you wear your wig all the time; you must regularly condition your scalp.

There are several forms of alopecia but probably the worst is “cicatricial alopecia” otherwise known as scarring alopecia. This is a rare disorder which destroys the hair follicle and replaces it with scar tissue; which causes permanent hair loss. Sometimes scarring alopecia is gradual, without symptoms and is not noticed for a long period of time. In other cases, there is severe itching, burning and pain prior to the hair loss. The inflammation actually destroys the hair follicle which is below the surface and typically, the scar is not seen on the scalp. Affected areas of the scalp may show signs of inflammation, redness, scaling, increased or decreased pigmentation, pustules, or draining sinuses. Scarring alopecia occurs in otherwise healthy men, women and children of all ages around the world.

There are two types of scarring alopecia, primary and secondary. Primary cicatricial alopecia is where the hair follicle is the target of destructive inflammatory processes. With secondary, the destruction of the hair follicle is incidental to a non-follicle directed process such as severe infections, burns, radiation or tumors.

The cause of scarring alopecia is not well understood. This type of alopecia involves inflammation directed at the hair follicles, usually at the upper part of the follicle where the stem cells and the oil glands are located. If the stem cells are destroyed along with the oil gland, there is then no possibility for regeneration of the hair follicle and the result is permanent hair loss.

Scarring alopeica most commonly strikes young adults although all ages may be affected. Epidemiological studies have not been done to determine the incidence of scarring alopecia but in general, it is not common. Usually, it is not associated with other illnesses. However, those with this disease may have an increased family history of autoimmune disorders.

Dermatologist have different treatments for cicatrical alopecia. Once the hair follicle is destroyed, the hair will not regrow. Wigs for Kids is an organization that provides hair replacement systems to children under the age of 18 who have lost their hair as a result of medical circumstances such as chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, burns or various accidents. Fantasia and other salons across the country are partnering with Wigs for Kids to provide this service.

To be eligible for Wigs for Kids; the family of the child must be unable to pay for a hairpiece after seeking assistance from all other resources and must be referred by a medical professional. Once the application is reviewed and accepted, a packet of information will be mailed to the family. The parent and child will need to make two visits to a certified salon or hair replacement center (such as Fantasia) located in your area.

The first visit will entail a consultation to measure the child’s head and get a photo of how the child wore their hair or would like to wear it. Hair samples will also be taken to match color. The second visit will be for the final cutting and fitting of the hair system along with maintenance and care training. Once the measurements have been taken, delivery time for the custom-made hair will take from 4-8 weeks.

Each eligible child receives a custom-made hair replacement system constructed from thousands of hand-tied strands of human hair, then shaped, cut , and styled to fit the child’s head. Wigs for Kids pays a minimum of $1500 to produce each system. There is no cost to the recipient. 3. Donations should be braided or tied in ponytails and tightly secured with 3-4 rubber bands, wrapped in tissue paper or placed in a plastic bag.
