Does Natural Stuff Really Work for Hair Loss?
I do a lot of writing about natural things we can do if we find ourselves like many Baby Boomers, losing our hair for whatever reasons. I like natural as opposed to invasive, surgical procedures. Although I grew up in the 60’s I have never considered myself a hippie or a “child of the earth.” As I wrote before, the older I get, the more I perfer natural things. Perhaps the wisdom which comes with age has something to do with it.
At any rate, it’s always rewarding to find out that something you believe in so strongly really does net great results. I just finished reading an account of a British actress who found herself dealing with the hair loss issue. She was known as one of the world’s most glamorous women, with a gorgeous body and trademark luxurious blond hair. However, after having her third child, she started losing excessive amounts of hair. She was 44 at the time and greatly alarmed by her thinning hair. She states that it got so bad she was embarrassed to go out of her home.
Then after going through menopause at the age of 54, her hair started vanishing in even larger amounts. At this point she turned to extensions but stated that she didn’t like them. In her opinion, they were high maintenance and dominated her life.
She then switched to wearing a wig so she could continue her stage work. However, it bothered her that it was not her real hair. At times she would wear a baseball cap but having been a sex symbol, stated that this was so “not her”.
The hair issue was magnified in her life, perhaps because of being an actress. Her hair was getting so thin you could see the shininess of her scalp. Now paranoia set in. In her words, “I would be all made up and looking glamorous with some outfit and then felt I looked awful because my hair was letting me down.”
After years of suffering, in 2004, she consulted the owner of a health food store in London. The owner had just started to stock a mineral supplement called Nourkin which several of his female customers were starting to get very excited about. The supplement contains various minerals including silica which is found in hair and fingernails. Additionally there is a “secret ingredient” said to come from a marine animal (shark, possibly?)
The actress started on the product and it worked for her. On her next visit to the hairdresser, she was told there was actually new hair growing, it was coming back! Today, she swears by her supplements and makes sure she has a good supply wherever she goes. She says these supplements really have changed her life. She has gone from being a recluse to once again having a social life!
For those of us who not dealing with hair loss issues, it’s hard to comprehend the magnitude of the impact it can have on a person’s life. It’s awesome to know there are natural alternatives out there that work!
