Essential Vitamins for the Hair

Our body needs a healthy balance of all nutrients in the diet in order to maintain a healthy life. This article focuses on various types of vitamins which contribute to hair loss problems.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, also known as PABA, is one of the essential vitamins for hair loss problems. It is part of the B complex family and a deficiency in PABA may lead to grey hair.

In combination with folic acid, PABA is found to be effective in restoring healthy hair. A diet rich in vitamin B can restore hair color. It also aids in improving excellence and potency of hair growth. You can get PABA from whole grain and yeast.

Inositol, also belonging to the B complex family and is typically found in brain cells, muscles, liver, kidneys and the eyes. Men loose their hair twice as fast as women, so perhaps it is that men are lacking in inositol and that is why they have the hair loss problems.

Inositol aids in hair loss problems and offers beneficial effects in different types of skin problems.

Biotin, also known as vitamin H and again, belongs to the B complex group. It is essential for hair health. Biotin functions in fat metabolism. Fat is essential for body growthgood-foods.jpg including hair growth. It also helps in prevention of gray hair. Egg yolks are a great source of biotin. Milk and yeast are good sources as well.

Vitamin E consists of antioxidant properties that offer scalp stimulation by enhancing blood circulation. You can get vitamin E from cold-processed vegetable oils, raw seeds and leafy green vegetables.

If you are suffering from high blood pressure or taking anti-coagulant medications, you should not take vitamin E supplements without consulting your doctor.

Vitamin C is also an antioxidant. It is one of the essential vitamins for hair loss issues. It helps maintain healthy skin and hair. There are plenty of natural foods available that-are rich in vitamin C. Citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, pineapples, tomatoes, green pepper, red pepper and many others are a great source of vitamin C.

Vitamin B complex which includes niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), vitamin B6 and vitamin B12; all contribute significantly with various health conditions. B3 helps promote good scalp circulation and is abundant in wheat germ, chicken, fish, turkey and meat. Large intake can cause what is referred to as a niacin flush. Vitamin B5 helps prevent premature graying and hair loss. You will find B5 in egg yolks, whole grain cereals fruits-and-vegies.jpgand organ meats.

When it comes to hair, you definitely are what you eat! And, supplementing your diet makes a whole lot of sense!

Hairs to Your Health

We’ve talked quite a bit about what or how to eat for overall hair health but I believe some of it bears repeating.

For good hair health, your diet should contain the following foods:

  • The sulphur foods which include onions, radishes, hemp seeds, aloe vera.
  • The silicon foods which are cucumbers, red peppers and other shiny-skinned produce.
  • The vitamin A foods which are carrots, arugula and papaya.
  • The zinc foods which are coconut, nuts and seeds.
  • The vitamin C foods which include all citrus foods.
  • The vitamin E foods including avacado and olives.raw-foods.jpg

What it the recurring theme here? Raw foods. Reality is that every raw plant food has something good to offer your body and your hair. Because nutrition is the newest of the sciences, they are discovering new things daily about the benefits of raw foods for the human body.

Since most of us are not eating all of the above mentioned foods daily, supplementing is necessary. Make sure the supplements you choose have good science behind them. Selenium, which is a necessary trace mineral, if consumed in too great of quantities, can actually cause hair loss. At Fantasia, we promote Isagenix products because of the science behind them. Jon Anderson, the product formulator of Isagenix products, has been formulating supplements for various companies for over 25+ years. He got frustrated with companies changing his formulations over time. As a scientist of nutrition, he knows what the requirements of the human body are for the various minerals and vitamins. About 6 isagenix.jpgyears ago he came to the conclusion that the only way he was going to assure that the formulations would remain as he created them, was to start his own company. That was beginning of Isagenix International and they have enjoyed record breaking success ever since!

Silica, calcium and iron are all good for hair growth, because, essentially, hair is an extension of your blood. Healthy blood, in conjunction with a healthy scalp, determines the state of your hair and its rate of growth.

So, again, some natural things you can do to assure healthy hair? Eat raw and green, as much as possible. And, as we’ve discussed before, you can stimulate your scalp to keep it healthy by massage. Whenever you shampoo your hair, spend some extra time massaging your scalp. If you are using one of the “minty” refreshing shampoos such as Nioxin or Pureology, this feels wonderful. I always joke with the hair stylist when I have my hair done and they are shampooing and massaging my head that they can continue with it for about a couple of hours!

You Are What You Eat

How many times have you heard, you are what you eat? Well, guess what, it’s true and it’s true especially when it comes to hair loss.

Hair loss can be devastating to your confidence and your social life whether you are male or female. Women especially can experience much anguish over thinning hair and hair loss issues.

So, what about diet when it comes to hair loss? What you eat can have a tremendous impact on hair loss and hair re-growth.more-good-food.jpg

Nutrient rich blood flow to the scalp is essential for natural hair growth and luster. Dry brittle hair is a classic symptom of pour hair health. So is excessive oil a symptom of poor hair health.

Your hair needs good oils, monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Good fats that help keep the LDL cholesterol down and are heart friendly are also healthy for your hair. You can get your good oil from almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, peanuts, pistachios and good olive oil, flax-seed oil or hemp oil. Flax-seed oil is high in omega 3 but hemp oil is even better as it has the correct balance of omega-3 and omega-6. Both of these are very important for hair.

Healthy hair needs B-vitamins. These assist in making red blood cells which carry oxygen to all the cells and this is important for hair health. Foods that contain B-vitamins are: whole grains such as wheat, oats, quinoa, wheat germ and brewers yeast. Also, chicken, turkey, sea foods, dairy products, eggs, leafy green vegetables and a variety of beans.

The importance of minerals is underestimated. Did you know vitamins are not utilized if the mineral balance is out of whack in your body? A lack of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc and silica can contribute to thinning hair. Mineral rich foods include dark leafy greens, sprouts, sea weed, fruits and vegetables.good-foods.jpg

Vitamin C is important for hair health and the absorption of minerals such as iron. Fruit , especially citrus is high in vitamin C.

Hair is mostly made up of protein. A protein rich diet should include sea foods, poultry eggs, and nuts to help keep hair lustrous. If you like red meats, make sure to choose lean cuts.

You should try to stick to a common sense diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and nuts and eat minimal if any processed foods. Most of these foods contain preservatives, pesticides and MSG which are not good foods for health or when trying to resolve hair issues.

Organic foods not only taste better but also have a higher nutrient content which is what you want when trying to improve the condition of your hair.

Hairs to your health, Bon Appetite!
