Female Pattern Baldness

The most common type of hair loss seen in women is female pattern baldness otherwise known as androgenetic alopecia. While alopecia means baldness; it does not mean complete hair loss. Typically, it is seen as thinning hair, predominately over the top and front of the head. This type of hair loss affects more than one third of the female population and is most commonly seen after menopause.

Usually the hair is gradually thinning rather than excess loss all at once. In female pattern baldness, when the affected hair is shed, a root grows in its place that is shorter. Eventually it becomes invisible like “peach fuzz”. Genetically, hair loss can come from either side of the family. No matter how quickly it comes or why it comes, it can be devastating to a woman’s confidence and self image.

Female pattern hair loss can begin as early as puberty. This is usually a sign of a hormone imbalance. Other signs would be excessive facial hair or body hair. There are medical solutions to help with this once it has been diagnosed.

Many women are unaware that hair loss can occur after pregnancy or after the discontinuation of birth control pills. Physical and psychological stresses to the body can also cause female pattern hair loss. The scientific name for this type of hair loss is Telogen Effuvium and the good news is that it is usually temporary.

There are non-surgical and non-chemical treatments for female pattern baldness. Fantasia offers several types of solutions for this including micro point links, accents, and top of the head hair replacement systems. We have discussed each one of these options in detail. If you or a loved one are dealing with thinning hair or hair loss, we’d like to help you. We would begin by bringing you in for a consultation with one of the professional hair replacement technicians at Fantasia. Then, in a private consultation room, they will discuss with you all of the hair loss solutions and help you decide what the best option would be for you. Don’t let thinning hair or hair loss affect your life anymore. Call us so we can help you get your life back!

Wigs for Kids

Wigs for Kids is an organization that provides hair replacement systems to children under the age of 18 who have lost their hair as a result of medical circumstances such as chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, burns or various accidents. Fantasia and other salons across the country are partnering with Wigs for Kids to provide this service.

To be eligible for Wigs for Kids; the family of the child must be unable to pay for a hairpiece after seeking assistance from all other resources and must be referred by a medical professional. Once the application is reviewed and accepted, a packet of information will be mailed to the family. The parent and child will need to make two visits to a certified salon or hair replacement center (such as Fantasia) located in your area.

The first visit will entail a consultation to measure the child’s head and get a photo of how the child wore their hair or would like to wear it. Hair samples will also be taken to match color. The second visit will be for the final cutting and fitting of the hair system along with maintenance and care training. Once the measurements have been taken, delivery time for the custom-made hair will take from 4-8 weeks.

Each eligible child receives a custom-made hair replacement system constructed from thousands of hand-tied strands of human hair, then shaped, cut , and styled to fit the child’s head. Wigs for Kids pays a minimum of $1500 to produce each system. There is no cost to the recipient. Fantasia is well qualified to do the shaping and cutting since we have been fitting wigs for men, women and children for many years.

Wigs for Kids is a nonprofit organizaton founded more than 27 years ago by Jeffrey and Zina Paul from Cleveland, Ohio. Because it is non-profit and there is no charge to the recipients or their family, donations are sincerely appreciated to help offset the expenses incurred by the organization.

Hair Donations are also accepted and appreciated. The guidelines are:

  1. Hair must be clean and completely dry. ( Hair that has been cut and saved is suitable for donation.)
  2. Minimum length for a hair donation is 12″. (Pull curly hair straight to measure.)
  3. Donations should be braided or tied in ponytails and tightly secured with 3-4 rubber bands, wrapped in tissue paper or placed in a plastic bag.

Fantasia receives hair and donations for Wigs for Kids. If you know someone who may be eligible for this program, you can call Fantasia for more information. Or you can go to their website for more information. www.wigsforkids.org

The Great Lengths System uses only 100% human hair, healthy, soft Indian hair. Every strand is uniform in color, texture and diameter. Each strand is pre-bonded with a patented protein polymer - a chemical compound that mimics human hair’s molecular structure. The protein polymers are activated when an advanced high-frequency instrument is used to attach the strands.

Fantasia salon resisted selling extensions for some time. Since we are experts in the field of hair replacement systems, we have seen hair loss in individuals who had worn hair extensions. If done improperly, hair extensions can cause traction alopecia. It was not until Great Lengths Extensions became available that we decided to enter into the world of hair extensions as a solution for thinning hair. With Great Lengths, we can offer an extremely versatile, exceptionally safe and virtually invisible system.

At Fantasia, we truly feel that Great Lengths quality surpasses and outlast every other human hair extension product available today. Many of the stylists and staff of Fantasia either have worn or are wearing Great Lengths Hair Extensions and eagerly market them to customers because of their positive experience with them.

If you are dealing with thinning hair, or if you’ve been wanting to change your hair. Call Fantasia to schedule a consultation to discuss Great Lengths Hair Extensions. One of our experts will be happy to discuss the options with you.

Options for Hair Loss

For the most part, over the years, wigs have been called…wigs. Today that’s changed and wigs are called many different things. Wigs have come a long way in terms of looking natural and being basically undetectable. What is really exciting however, is that the industry has so much more to offer for hair loss than just wigs.
There are non-surgical hair additions which are external hair-bearing devices added to the existing hair or scalp to give the appearance of a fuller head of hair. Today, in this category, there are a range of choices including hair extensions, micro point links, accents, hairpieces, integrations and partial hair replacements. These devices may consist of human hair, synthetic fiber, a combination of both, or Cyberhair. (Not all salons carry Cyberhair, Fantasia is one of a couple salons in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area offering this awesome product.)

Today, partial hair additions in the above mentioned forms, have become more popular than wigs. They are attached in a variety of ways, some very labor intensive, but are virtually undectectable. Not everyone is a candidate for every type of hair replacement. At Fantasia, we will first visit with you to determine which would be your best option.

Many factors would determine which product would be the best fit. How active are you? Do you work out and swim? How healthy is your existing hair? At Fantasia, rather than simply selling you something; we would begin by putting you on Hair Support System to strengthen your hair for a better foundation for the treatment you select. There are replacement treatments Fantasia will not do such as weaves and some types of hair extensions because they can cause permanent damage to the hair. Fantasia is very particular about the hair replacement systems we offer and uses only those which will enhance hair without damaging it.

Some hair replacement systems use skin as the anchor site which require adhesives such as two sided tapes and water-proof liquids. Fantasia has researched these products and uses only those which are determined safe by dermatologists.

Cause of hair loss or thinning hair would be a determining factor for what hair replacement system you would want to consider. If hair loss is due to chemotherapy or physical issues; you should probably choose a full wig. Fantasia has been customizing wigs since the 1970’s and has a full inventory of synthetics and human hair wigs ranging in price from $200. to $5000. The process begins by bringing you in for a no cost, no obligation consultation.

The various hair systems have a broad range in terms of costs. Some treatments such as micro point links, have to be maintained and require a visit to the salon every 5-6 weeks. Again, based on your consultation and selection of hair replacement, Fantasia will be give you all of the facts up front. You will leaving knowing what the costs are and what the maintenance is going to be. This will allow you to make an informed decision.

Things to consider:

Insurance generally does not cover the costs for male or female pattern hair loss. It may however, cover the cost of a hair addition when the loss is caused by disease or other abnormalities. Always be prepared to cover the cost yourself and consider it a nice surprise if your insurance pays anything.

If you elect to wear a wig and lead a busy life style, you may want to think about having two systems. They get dirty and need to washed and restyled, depending on the frequency of wear. Sometimes it’s nice to have a second one so you always have a fresh look. And, eventually both will need to be replaced, again due to frequency of wear and the quality of the hair replacement system. Even a human hair system, which can be dyed, brushed and permed to match your own hair, will break down eventually. Unlike your own hair which is constantly growing and renewing itself, the wig is going to have to be replaced. Many factors contribute to the time frame of this and the experts at Fantasia will be happy to educate you.

With all of the options for thinning hair and hair loss today, there is something for everyone no matter the lifestyle or the budget!
