Diabetes and Hair Loss, a Connection?

You are probably aware that diabetes can cause a lot of symptoms. But, are you aware that hair loss is one of them?

Hair loss will normally begin at the onset of diabetes and gradually gets worse as thehair-loss.jpg disease progresses. It is normal to shed some hair daily, but when the shedding rate exceeds the rate of re-growth, you will begin to notice thinning hair or bald patches.

Hair has a growth cycle. A normal hair growth cycle will last for 2-6 years. The growth stage of the cycle is known as the antigen stage. Each hair on your head grows at a rate of approximately one half inch per month. Ninety percent of all the hair on your head is in the growth stage at one time. The other ten percent of your hair is in what is known as the telogen or resting phase. The resting phase will last for 2-3 months and then that hair is shed.

Being a diabetic increases your chance of hair loss. Diabetics are more prone to get skin infections and other fungal infections that can affect the scalp. Stress from the disease can also cause hair loss. Certain medicines that you may be taking for diabetes or other conditions can also cause your hair to fall out.

Getting your diabetes under control should be the first step that you take. Hair loss may stop after your blood sugar is under control and your body is able to function normally. Some hair loss may require medical treatment. For example, if your hair loss is caused by a fungal infection, medication would be needed to get rid of the infection.

MicroPoint Links increase the volume of your hair by 400% so it would be a great solution for hair loss caused from diabetes or other conditions. It is vital that you maintain good blood sugar levels, follow a good diet and exercise. If you do the right things you may be able to stop the hair loss in it’s tracks. Again, if you need a solution for thinning hair, the Hair Replacement Specialists at Fantasia would love to help you find a solution.

Girsl learn from their older siblings or their mom just how they are supposed to look and to behave. When a girl sees older girls or mom fussing over her hair and spending an inordinate amount of time on her appearance, she will grow up to believe this is the correct way for a woman to behave.

Hair Loss Is On The Rise…

And, guess who is the hardest hit? If you said women, you are correct. There are so many contributing factors but, stress and hormonal imbalance are among the biggest culprits.

Everyday women worldwide look in the mirror and where they used to see beautiful, healthy hair, they now see an increasing proportion of scalp. Agonizing over their hair loss, they try to hide it with makeup, creative hairstyles orwomens-thinning-hair.jpg sometimes even hair extensions. Hair extensions are not a good solution for thinning hair as they can actually damage already stressed-out hair. There are solutions, this is just not one of them.

Here’s the irony. Stress itself is the main reason why many women are facing hair loss and what appears to be early balding and, stressing over the situation makes it even worse! A professional from the California based Miyohara International Trichology clinic says they are no longer surprised to see the physical indicators of stress when viewing hair samples through a microscope.

“The number of women suffering from hair loss is definitely on the rise. Even more disturbing is that nearly 80 percent of the time, women’s hair samples show symptoms of thyroid diseases or hormone imbalances, which are serious manifestations of stress-related disorders.stressed-out.jpg

Unlike a blood test, which only provides results based on what the body is experiencing at the moment of the blood draw, trichology’s cutting - edge microscopic diagnosis reveals up to six months’ worth of a person’s physical history. The testing also shows that stress doesn’t discriminate - it’s present in the hair of women young and old, but particularly those leading demanding careers or lifestyles.”

This same professional goes on to say, ” Here in California, I’m diagnosing teenage girls, working mothers and menopausal women. There are even celebrities and models battling hair loss. Women everywhere are stressed. Their bodies are under attack, so their hair is falling out or bald spots are appearing. Sadly they are struggling with hair loss, trying to solve the problem on their own.”

At Fantasia, one of the things we do is provide solutions for the problems of thinning hair and hair loss in women. We have been providing these services for years and continue to stay on the cutting - edge of the technology available. I mentioned earlier that hair extensions are not a good solution for these issues.mircopoint-links.jpg However, there are great solutions such as MicroPoint Links, Integrations and Hair Replacement. One of the hair replacement specialist at Fantasia would happy to talk with you to determine what would be a good solution for you.

Myths & Facts About Hair Loss

Our appearance is usually something we take pride in, one of the first things we focus on when getting ready for our day. Our hair is generally a huge part of that focus. Let’s talk about some myths and facts about hair loss.

Hair loss does not affect men only. True, women and children can also experience thinning hair and hair loss. Men tend to lose great amounts of visible hair, women hair tends to become thin and over time, will become noticeably thinner. Some women (and men) will become bald, particularly when going through treatments for medical issues such as cancer. Children can also experience thinning hair and hair loss particularly with alopecia.

Smoking affects hair loss. Smoking interrupts blood circulation to the scalp as well as other parts of the body, so, yes this is true. I have previously written about studies which were done to determine if this were true and the conclusions were that smoking definitely can contribute to hair loss.

Losing your hair is hereditary. True again. It’s all about genetics and family history. If either parent had tinning hair or baldness, or a family member on either side, you may be the one who ends up with the (gene) predisposition for baldness.

Dyeing your hair makes it fall out. There is no evidence to suggest that dyeing, highlighting, or perming hair causes it to fall out prematurely. That said, those processes can damage your hair, so, talk with your doctor and hair stylist about using products which will be gentle on your hair and scalp.

Wearing hats all of the time will cause you to lose your hair. Hats cangirl-wearing-hats.jpg cover up a bad haircut, a bad hair day or evidence of thinning hair. However, while it may be a risky fashion statement, it will not cause your hair to fall out!

If you have hair loss, you will just have to live with it. Not so, there are many solutions today for thinning hair and hair loss. There is a full range of things from medications to solutions such as MicroPoint Links, Hair Support System, and many other options.micro-point-links.jpg

If you find yourself dealing with thinning hair and hair loss, decide first if you want a natural, non-surgical approach, or if you want to use drugs and surgery. Once you make this decision, check with your stylist or doctor to see how you should proceed.

Natural Alternatives for Hair Loss

Are there alternative things you can do for hair re-growth and color? According to Dr. Charles Turner and Dr. Todd Hostetler, chiropractic physicians, there are alternative options which they are lecturing about. In their lectures, they will discuss alternative medicine, natural hair re-growth and color restoration, weight loss and natuaral pain medication.thinning-hair.jpg

The natural treatment the doctors recommend for hair re-growth and color restoration is PABA. PABA works in about 40 percent of the people who take it in high does, Dr. Hostetler says. PABA is a form of aminobenzoic acid which is part of the vitamin-B Complex family. When it works, it can result in hair regrowth, color restoration and softer skin because it improves certain metabolic functions in the body after about two to three months.

Unlike medications, there are benefits and absolutely no side effects. In addition to recommending the PABA for hair issues, the doctors deal with weight loss management by putting patients on high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets and stressing the individuals keep a journal of everything they eat. The doctors recommend chromium, a mineral which decreases carbohydrate cravings.

Additionally the doctors recommend taking natural supplements, in some cases a natural thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyrodism and of course, exercise.

The doctors have had tremendous success with some of the patients they have worked with. One patient, a non-fiction writer, reports that her hair had turned white, but, she started taking PABA and in about two months, her hair returned to its natural dark blond color. She said it didn’t happen overnight but, gradually the hair became less white. Another patient reports that “my hair in the front was thinning and the bangs were practically bald”. She started taking the PABA and after two months, her bangs grew in full and black like her natural hair color.

Remember, these alternative treatments work about 40% of the time. For the other 60%, there is Hair Support System and Micropoint links for the thinning hair. You may want to try a natural approach first and see if it works for you. If not, don’t despair as there are solutions for thinning hair and hair loss. With one in four of the baby boomers dealing with hair loss issues, you have not been forgotten!
